On the Complexity of Some Colorful Problems Parameterized by Treewidth

چکیده
We study the complexity of several coloring problems on graphs, parameterized by the treewidth t of the graph: (1) The list chromatic number χl(G) of a graph G is defined to be the smallest positive integer r, such that for every assignment to the vertices v of G, of a list Lv of colors, where each list has length at least r, there is a choice of one color from each vertex list Lv yielding a proper coloring of G. We show that the problem of determining whether χl(G) ≤ r, the LIST CHROMATIC NUMBER problem, is solvable in linear time for every fixed treewidth bound t. The method by which this is shown is new and of general applicability. (2) The LIST COLORING problem takes as input a graph G, together with an assignment to each vertex v of a set of colors Cv . The problem is to determine whether it is possible to choose a color for vertex v from the set of permitted colors Cv , for each vertex, so that the obtained coloring of G is proper. We show that this problem is W [1]-hard, parameterized by the treewidth of G. The closely related PRECOLORING EXTENSION problem is also shown to be W [1]-hard, parameterized by treewidth. (3) An equitable coloring of a graph G is a proper coloring of the vertices where the numbers of vertices having any two distinct colors differs by at most one. We show that the problem is hard for W [1], parameterized by (t, r). We also show that a list-based variation, LIST EQUITABLE COLORING is W [1]-hard for trees, parameterized by the number of colors on the lists. Hitting Forbidden Subgraphs in Graphs of Bounded Treewidth
We study the complexity of a generic hitting problem HSubgraph Hitting, where given a fixed pattern graph H and an input graph G, we seek for the minimum size of a set X ⊆ V (G) that hits all subgraphs of G isomorphic to H. In the colorful variant of the problem, each vertex of G is precolored with some color from V (H) and we require to hit only H-subgraphs with matching colors. Standard techn...
متن کاملClique-width: on the price of generality
Many hard problems can be solved efficiently when the input is restricted to graphs of bounded treewidth. By the celebrated result of Courcelle, every decision problem expressible in monadic second order logic is fixed parameter tractable when parameterized by the treewidth of the input graph. Moreover, for every fixed k ≥ 0, such problems can be solved in linear time on graphs of treewidth at ...
متن کاملCapacitated Domination and Covering: A Parameterized Perspective
Capacitated versions of Vertex Cover and Dominating Set have been studied intensively in terms of polynomial time approximation algorithms. Although the problems Dominating Set and Vertex Cover have been subjected to considerable scrutiny in the parameterized complexity world, this is not true for their capacitated versions. Here we make an attempt to understand the behavior of the problems Cap...
متن کاملDefensive Alliances in Graphs of Bounded Treewidth
A set S of vertices of a graph is a defensive alliance if, for each element of S, the majority of its neighbors is in S. The problem of finding a defensive alliance of minimum size in a given graph is NP-hard and there are polynomial-time algorithms if certain parameters are bounded by a fixed constant. In particular, fixed-parameter tractability results have been obtained for some structural p...
متن کاملParameterized Parallel Complexity
We consider the framework of Parameterized Complexity and we investigate the issue of which problems do admit eecient xed parameter parallel algorithms. In particular, we introduce two classes of eeciently parallelizable parameterized problems, PNC and FPP, according to the degree of eeciency we want to obtain. We sketch both some FPP-algorithms solving natural parameterized problems and a usef...
